A 23-year-old suspected drunk driver was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run for crashing into a parked car in Long Beach, killing a 56-year-old woman inside, then trying to flee the location on foot, police said Sunday.

Officers were dispatched to the crash scene on Canal Street, south of Ester Street, at approximately 4:40 p.m. Saturday, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

A 2003 Nissan Altima was going eastbound on Canal Avenue when it struck a parked 1995 Toyota Tercel. The impact caused the Tercel to strike the trailer of a parked semi-truck.

The Tercel was occupied by a 56-year-old woman, who was a resident of Rancho Dominguez. She died at the scene. Her name will be released pending notification of next of kin.

“The driver of the Nissan Altima stepped out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot after the collision,” according to Long Beach police. “He was taken into custody shortly after the collision.”

The motorist was identified as Eric Munson of Long Beach. Munson was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and felony hit and run. He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

A passenger inside the Altima remained at the scene, cooperated with police and was released.

The Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail asked anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at 562-570-7355.
