A California Highway Patrol officer responding to a stolen vehicle call in Sylmar was fired upon Monday evening by a male suspect who remained at large.

The shots were reported at 7:12 p.m. in the 12900 block of Little Tujunga Canyon Road, according to CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

The officer was not hit, Polizzi said.

Several officers were at the scene, he said.

A sheriff’s helicopter was overhead, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said, urging civilians to stay out of the area.

CBSLA reported the suspect was getting in and out of CHP patrol cars that were abandoned when he opened fire on them, adding officers have not returned fire.

FOX11 reported the officers were conducting a stolen vehicle investigation at the time the shots were fired.
