A man was in custody Wednesday in the shooting death of his estranged wife in a Kohl’s store at a Whittier shopping center, police said.
Officers were called about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Whittwood Town Center on Whittier Boulevard near Santa Gertrudes Avenue after getting reports that shots were fired, according to the Whittier Police Department.
The victim, who was in her 40s, was found on the floor inside the Kohl’s store and died at the scene, police said.
Enrique Acosta, 41, who lives in an unincorporated area near Whittier, was taken into custody in the Barstow area and booked on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $1 million, police said.
Whittier police Officer Hugo Figueroa told City News Service Wednesday afternoon that the suspect was the estranged husband of the victim, and the pair had been separated for about a year. The woman, whose name withheld pending notification of her family, did not work at the store, Figueroa said.
“They were having some type of verbal argument while she was checking out and, at some point, he produced a handgun and shot her,” Figueroa told NBC4.
