A 33-year-old man was charged Tuesday with attempting to kill his wife in front of their five children in Santa Ana.

Emmanuel Tapia was charged with one count each of attempted murder and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, all felonies, as well as five misdemeanor counts of child abuse and endangerment.

Tapia also faces sentencing enhancement allegations for the personal use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury in a domestic violence incident.

Tapia got into a verbal argument about 10 a.m. Saturday that escalated when the defendant beat and slashed at his wife with a knife, leaving her with several lacerations, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna alleged. The attack happened in front of their children, ranging in age from 13 to 3, he said.
