A brush fire that broke out Thursday in the Santa Ana River bottom near Interstate 15 in Norco was quickly knocked down by crews, scorching less than an acre.
The non-injury blaze was reported about 1:15 p.m. near the I-15 bridge and River Drive, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered slow-moving flames in light vegetation, but within sight of homes, according to officials at the scene.
Firefighters completely encircled the brusher 10 minutes later.
Cal Fire aircraft were initially ordered but did not leave the ground at Hemet-Ryan Airport after a battalion chief declared that the blaze was under control, officials said.
The river bottom is dotted with homeless encampments, and blazes are a regular occurrence throughout the year, often because of transients lighting campfires or igniting debris.
The cause of the blaze Thursday was under investigation.
