A brush fire erupted Monday east of Highway 79 in Aguanga, burning roughly 10 acres before Cal Fire aircraft began making runs to slow its advance.

The blaze was reported about 12:40 p.m. in the area of Highland and Aguanga Ranchos roads, near the junction for Highways 79 and 371, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine and hand crews from the county, U.S. Forest Service and other departments were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate to the southeast. Winds were not significant at the time.

The fire started on or near a residential property, but there was no immediate word on whether any structures were damaged.

Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter initiated runs on the brusher prior to ground crews’ arrival, slowing its spread, according to reports from the scene.

No homes were under immediate threat from the fire, and no road closures were in effect.

It was unclear what might have triggered the blaze.
