One person was killed and a woman was injured in a two-alarm blaze in an apartment building in Cypress Thursday.

The blaze broke out about 9:20 a.m. Thursday in the 5700 block of Playa Way and was knocked down in about 30 minutes, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Thanh Nguyen said. Firefighters contained the blaze to one unit.

The woman who escaped the blaze was taken to an area hospital, Nguyen said. It was not immediately clear how badly she was hurt, he said.

It was also not immediately clear what gender or age the fatal victim was, Nguyen said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Two women helped get the surviving victim out of the burning home, he said.

A neighbor who smelled smoke went outside to investigate and saw the flames, so she went back in to get a knife to cut through a screen to get the victim out through a window, Nguyen said. Meanwhile, another woman broke the window and when the other neighbor returned, they both managed to get the resident out of the blaze.

The doorway to the home was aflame, so that victim wouldn’t have been able to get out that way, he said.
