A Los Angeles Police Department officer has been charged with assaulting and seriously injuring a suspect after responding to a domestic violence call last year, L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón announced Tuesday.
Garo Garabedian, 42, is set to be arraigned Nov. 21 in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on two felony counts of assault under the color of authority, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Garabedian — who responded with other officers to the May 29, 2023 call — allegedly assaulted a male suspect while arresting him, resulting in serious injuries, according to the D.A.’s office.
He could face up to six years and eight months in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Garabedian’s current status with the LAPD was not immediately available.
“As law enforcement officers, those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting our community must be held to the highest of standards of integrity and accountability,” Gascón said in a statement announcing the charges.
“Violating this trust undermines both public safety and the principles of justice that officers have sworn to uphold. No one is above the law, and we will pursue justice in this case to maintain the public’s faith in those who serve and protect.”
