A brush fire that broke out Thursday on the side of a mountain in Moreno Valley scorched roughly an acre before it was stopped.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 3:25 p.m. on the south side of Box Springs Mountain, above Ironwood Avenue, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location, but they initially encountered difficulties hiking to where the slow-moving flames were located, prompting a request for Cal Fire aircraft to make runs on the brusher.
No homes or other structures were threatened. There are mainly broadcast transmission towers atop the mountain.
An air tanker and water-dropping helicopter reached the spot within a few minutes and made several drops that stopped the fire’s forward rate of spread just after 4 p.m., according to reports from the scene.
The blaze was near full containment as of 4:30 p.m.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
