Forty drivers were arrested for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended or revoked license, four drivers were arrested for DUI and 40 citations were issued during a DUI vehicle inspection operation Saturday in Riverside.
The checkpoint was held at Market Street, north of Fifth Street, between the hours of 8 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday, said Sgt. Daniel Macias of the Riverside Police Department.
In addition to the arrests and citations, one motorist was arrested for both DUI and drug possession. In total, 714 vehicles were screened at the checkpoint.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, the department said. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
