Four people became trapped in a low head dam in the LA River in Long Beach and one man and a dog died, according to reports Monday.
The catastrophe occurred at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday in the LA River near Anaheim Street, according to ABC7.
An adult and a 1-year-old child reportedly were rescued by the Long Beach Fire Department and taken to a trauma center for treatment and a second child was in the water but not injured.
Low head dams are built in rivers or streams to help water flow continuously over the crest from bank to bank, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers. They create turbulent currents and are often referred to as “drowning machines.”
