A 34-year-old convicted felon was charged Monday with attempting to kill an Orange County sheriff’s deputy in Lake Forest.
Ethan Chase Mull was involved in a domestic violence incident Wednesday before he encountered deputies leading to his being shot by a deputy Thursday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies were dispatched about 3 p.m. Thursday to a store near Trabuco and El Toro roads, deputies said. When Mull left the store deputies attempted to detain him, and after he pointed a gun at deputies he was shot, deputies said.
Mull was also bitten by a police dog and taken to a hospital to be treated for his wounds, deputies said.
Mull was charged with attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic rifle on a peace officer, possession of a gun by a felon, possession of an undetectable gun, carrying a loaded gun in public and carrying a loaded unregistered gun in public, all felonies.
Mull is also facing sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a gun, personal use of a deadly weapon and committing a crime while released from custody on another case.
Mull was scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 15 in the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.
Mull pleaded guilty in January 2019 to assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, contempt of a domestic violence order with a prior conviction for that crime, all felonies, and also pleaded guilty to a count of possessing a stun gun with a prior conviction and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.
Mull pleaded guilty in October 2023 to possession of a gun by a felon, being a felon in possession of body armor, possession of a silencer and a prohibited person owning ammunition, all felonies, as well as resisting arrest.
