A suspect has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a man who was struck while riding a motorized scooter in Panorama City, authorities said Tuesday.

Daniel Casillas, 30, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. The Arleta resident’s bail was set at $30,000, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

He was transported to Van Nuys Jail.

Gary Schombert, 34, who was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as the victim, was riding the scooter north on Woodman Avenue, at Strathern Street, at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when it was struck by a gray, four-door Honda sedan that was heading northbound on Woodman.

The impact caused Schombert to be ejected from the scooter and land in the roadway.

“Following the first collision, a second vehicle collided with the motorized scooter proceeding northbound Woodman Avenue,” according to a police statement. “The driver in the second collision is cooperating with the investigation.”

Arriving paramedics pronounced Schombert dead at the scene.

Anyone with information about the crash was urged to call the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8025 or, during non-business hours and weekends, at 877-527-3247. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
