A grand theft suspect officers were attempting to detain was shot and wounded multiple times by police in Bell Monday.

The shooting occurred about 7:45 a.m. Monday in the 4000 block of East Florence Avenue, according to the sheriff’s department.

Deputies located a vehicle connected to a reported grand theft. As they approached the vehicle and attempted to detain the driver, an officer-involved shooting occurred, authorities said.

The suspect fled, prompting a vehicle pursuit by law enforcement. The chase continued until reaching the 2500 block of Slauson Avenue, between Santa Fe and Pacific avenues, in Huntington Park, where a brief standoff occurred before the suspect complied and was taken into custody.

“The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Medical aid was immediately rendered to the suspect,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

He was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition, but the extent of his injuries was not immediately available.

Sheriff’s detectives were sent to the scene about 9:45 a.m. to assist the Bell Police Department in the shooting investigation.

There were no reports of injuries to officers. No details about what led up to the shooting were immediately available.
