Two officers whose alleged horseplay resulted in one of them suffering a gunshot wound have been placed on administrative leave as an investigation into the shooting was reopened following the release of video of the incident, officials said Monday.
The shooting occurred on Sept. 7, 2025 in the police parking structure at 240 Ramona St., according to the Pasadena Police Department, which reported that the injured officer has since recovered.
The video showed two officers standing behind a squad car and one of them draws his service weapon and points at toward another approaching cruiser, from which the video was recorded.
Seconds later the officer appears to suffer a gunshot injury to his left shoulder as an officer in the approaching vehicle drew and fired through the windshield.
“The public release of this video was delayed to allow investigators to complete essential investigative steps and to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” according to a statement issued by Pasadena police when the video was released Wednesday.
On Monday, the department issued a new statement from Police Chief Gene Harris.
“Following the release of the OIS video last week, a witness came forward with additional information, and a new investigation has been opened based on documentation received Sunday, June 14,” Harris said.
“The officers alleged to be involved have been placed on administrative leave — not simply because it’s policy, but because it reflects how seriously we take matters like this. When questions arise about conduct, we act,” Harris added.
“Thorough investigations take time, and I won’t rush one at the expense of the truth. What I can promise is that I will be as transparent as California law allows and share information with this community as quickly as I’m able.”
That should not have happened. They are supposed to be an example of proper gun handling , in one way they are, teaching how not to play with guns.
