Deputies arrested two suspects accused of attempting to steal copper piping and wiring from a commercial property in Lakewood, authorities announced Tuesday.
Deputies assigned to the Lakewood sheriff’s station responded to the 3200 block of East Carson Street on June 17 regarding reports of suspicious activity involving unauthorized individuals inside a vacant development site, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
They found evidence of forced entry, along with indications copper piping and wiring had been cut in an attempt to remove the materials from the building, sheriff’s officials said.
Sounds consistent with construction tools being used inside the structure were heard by deputies as they established a perimeter around the area, authorities said.
Due to the building’s size and hazardous condition, LASD Special Enforcement Bureau personnel responded to the location to assist deputies with the operation.
The two suspects were hiding inside the building, and after repeated orders to exit the building, they were eventually taken into custody without incident.
Several burglary tools were recovered from the scene as evidence related to the attempted theft of copper materials, sheriff’s officials said, adding that approximately 100 pounds of copper piping and wiring was recovered during the investigation.
The case was presented to the Los Angeles County District’s Attorney’s Office, which charged both suspects with burglary and resisting arrest, along with delaying or obstructing a peace officer.
Anyone with information regarding the alleged theft was urged to contact the Lakewood sheriff’s station Detective Bureau at 562-623-3500. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
