A brush fire that erupted Friday off the end of the main runway at Hemet-Ryan Airport charred about two acres before it was stopped.
The non-injury blaze was reported shortly before 4 p.m. Friday in the immediate vicinity of Runway 5/23, according to the Hemet Fire Department.
The agency deployed multiple engine crews, but they required assistance from the Riverside County Fire Department, which sent several crews and a Cal Fire water-dropping helicopter to make runs.
As of 5 p.m., the fire’s forward rate of spread was halted.
The chopper returned to its pad at the airport moments later, while ground personnel established containment lines.
No structures were damaged.
The airport has the main runway for routine traffic — including all Cal Fire aircraft located there — and an adjacent smaller runway for glider operations.
The airport remained open during the blaze, the cause of which was under investigation.
