The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will begin a series of hiring seminars Wednesday for would-be patrol deputies, jail guards, SWAT members and investigators.

The largest sheriff’s department in the country has employment opportunities in patrol, custody, court services, transit policing, investigations, cybercrimes, SWAT, search and rescue, mounted enforcement and marine enforcement.

“We’re seeking only the most talented, most dedicated and most committed people to join our team,” Sheriff Jim McDonnell said in a video targeting recruits.

The department is looking to graduate roughly 400 deputies from its training academy over the next 12 months, a spokesman said.

Candidates must pass a written exam, take a physical agility test and polygraph test and undergo medical and psychological evaluations in order to make the grade for the academy. Even after all that preparation, roughly 25 percent wash out of training, according to the department.

The first seminar, scheduled for 6 p.m. in Whittier, will include an overview of employment opportunities and an explanation of the background check and hiring process.
