The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday directed staffers to find more ways to cut back on water use.

The board told departments last summer to start implementing statewide emergency water conservation regulations.

Supervisor Don Knabe called  for a report on what actions are being taken and said more needs to be done, citing Gov. Jerry Brown’s action last week to institute mandatory 25 percent cuts in urban water use statewide.

“I know people get tired of hearing about the drought and our residents have, by and large, done a terrific job of cutting back,” Knabe said. “(However), we must do everything we can to reduce our reliance on far-away water sources and minimize the long-term impacts of a prolonged drought.”

Knabe said the county has a duty, as the largest in the state, to “set an example” during the worst drought in California history.

Recommendations from the Department of Public Works are expected back in 30 days. The board’s action also ordered the Waterworks District to notify customers of the 25 percent reduction.
