Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino will join city officials Saturday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on several repairs and upgrades at Alma Park aimed at improving public safety.

Two broken lights and a damaged fence were fixed, and trees were trimmed to allow for better visibility at Alma Park, as part of requests by the Los Angeles Police Department, council aides said.

Maintenance staffing for the park at West 21st and South Meyler streets was also increased to eight hours per week.

Other improvements include the repair of two sidewalks cracked by tree roots, and added trash cans.

Recreation and Parks Department General Manager Mike Shull is expected to join Buscaino for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which is also being held for improvements at Rena Park, also in the San Pedro area at 510 N. Leland Ave.

The Los Angeles City Council is also scheduled to vote next Wednesday on a proposal to further restrict night time hours at Alma Park, by setting the park’s hours from sunset to sunrise each day, in response to San Pedro residents’ complaints about illegal activity in the area. The park is currently open from 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
