The Los Angeles City Council agreed Wednesday to limit open hours at Alma Park in response to San Pedro residents’ complaints about illegal activity in the area.

The council approved new sunrise-to-sunset hours, scaling back on night- time use of the park at West 21st and South Meyler streets, which had been open from 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Councilman Joe Buscaino, who requested the new hours, recently also announced several repairs and upgrades at Alma Park aimed at boosting public safety.

Two broken lights and a damaged fence were fixed, and trees were trimmed to allow for better visibility, at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department, Buscaino aides said.

Maintenance staffing for the park at West 21st and South Meyler streets was also increased to eight hours per week.

Other improvements included the repair of two sidewalks cracked by tree roots, and additional trash cans.
