The effort to bring the Summer Olympic Games back to the United States in 2024 reached its latest milestone Friday, with the Los Angeles committee submitting venue commitments and other candidature materials to the International Olympic Committee.
Los Angeles is vying with Budapest, Hungary, and Paris to host the Games. The pool is whittled down from the previous round, after Rome recently ended its bid.
The candidature package submitted by the Los Angeles 2024 bid committee includes venue commitments from facilities in downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and other areas that had long been on the books.
Venue commitments were also recently announced for Riviera Country Club for golf events, the Long Beach Arena and Convention Center, and the Honda Center in Anaheim.
The candidature package includes a commitment from the federal government to provide Secret Service security during the Games, and a $250 million commitment by the state of California to cover cost overruns.
A third and final application package that goes into detail about the budget for the Games is due early next year, with the IOC scheduled to make a decision by late 2017.
Los Angeles city officials said they will retain an independent expert, paid for by LA 2024, to delve more deeply into the finances and budget for hosting the Olympics.
The Summer Olympic Games were last held in the U.S. in 1996, when it was hosted by Atlanta. Los Angeles has hosted the Games twice, in 1984 and 1932.
