Metro officials Tuesday applauded members of Congress and President Donald Trump for approving $94.3 million in mobility-related funding for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

On Tuesday, Trump signed a roughly $1.2 trillion spending package to end a partial government shutdown, hours after the House approved the spending bill. The proposal included federal dollars to support transportation initiatives being led by LA Metro as the region prepares for the 2028 Games.

Metro Chair and Whittier City Councilman Fernando Dutra in a statement said he appreciated the leadership from the California Congressional delegation, including Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, D-California, and Reps. Pete Aguilar, D-San Bernardino, and Norma Torres, D-Chino Hills, who serve on the House Appropriations Committee.

Dutra noted the funding came from a bipartisan effort with support from Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy.

The transit agency explained funding will support the Games Enhanced Transit System, which involves advance service planning, initial leasing costs for land, design for temporary bus facilities and improvements to stations.

Federal dollars will also support the final design and engineering for key station enhancements, mobility hubs and light rail improvements, as well as improvements for pedestrians around venue areas.

Out of a total $100 million included in the federal spending package to support transportation initiatives for the 2026 World Cup, Metro is expected to receive $9.1 million.

Additional funding from the bill is expected to provide $2.3 million for bus stop improvements, $149 million for the Vermont bus rapid transit line, and $15 million for transit safety, Metro said.
