“Finding Dory” easily held off the debut of “Independence Day: Resurgence” to remain the box office champ at the North American movie theaters this weekend.
The Disney animated feature was on track for $73.2 million in sales this weekend in the United States and Canada this weekend, according to studio estimates.
Add in the box office receipts from the prior seven days, Dory is swimming is a sea of nearly 287 million new Disney dollars.
“Central Intelligence” was predicted to sell $18.4 million in tickets in this, its second weekend of showings.
Two movies debuted in the fourth and fifth positions: “The Shallows” at $16.7 million and “Free State Of Jones” at $7.8 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “The Conjuring 2″ ($7.7 million),”Now You See Me 2” ($5.7 million), “X-Men: Apocalypse” ($2.5 million), “Teenage Mutant Ninjas” ($2.4 million) and “Warcraft” ($2.1 million).
