“Crazy Rich Asians” was the most-popular film in the United States and Canada for the third straight week, as it was on track to sell $22.2 million worth of tickets so far this weekend.
By the close of business Sunday, the end-of-summer romantic comedy was expected to have cleared $111 million domestically, according to studio estimates collected by analysts at comScore.
“The Meg” — the latest scary summer shark movie — was on track to add another $10.5 million three-day weekend period, and attain a North American total of $120.5 million over four weeks.
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” was on track for a $7 million take on this, its fifth weekend of showings. It will have brought in $204.3 million through Sunday evening in North America.
A new movie debuted in fourth place: “Operation Finale,” a thriller based on the true story of the Israeli government’s infiltration of an Argentinian Nazi cell, harboring German war criminal Adolf Eichmann. It was on track for $6 million by Sunday night.
“Searching” was expanded into wide release for the first time, and was on track to open with $5.7 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies, as estimated by the studios for the first three days of the holiday weekend, were “Christopher Robin” ($5 million), “Alpha” ($4.5 million), “The Happytime Murders” ($4.4 million), “BlacKkKlansman” ($4.1 million) and “Mile 22” ($3.6 million).
As Monday is Labor Day, the studios will released four day sales results Monday.
