“`Soul” won five awards at Tuesday evening’s virtual 19th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, including best visual effects in an animated feature film.

The Pixar computer-animated comedy-drama won in every category it was nominated in. Its other wins were for outstanding animated character in an animated feature; outstanding created environment in an animated feature; outstanding virtual cinematography in a CG project and outstanding effects simulations in an animated feature.

The Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” led the field with 13 nominations and won three awards — outstanding visual effects in a photoreal episode, outstanding animated character in an episode or real-time project and outstanding created environment in an episode, commercial or real-time project.

“The Midnight Sky” won for outstanding visual effects in a feature film. The field also consisted of “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Project Power,” “Tenet” and “The Witches.”

“Mank” won for outstanding supporting visual effects in a feature film. The other nominees were “Da 5 Bloods,” “Extraction,” “News of the World” and “Welcome to Chechnya.”

The awards were presented in a virtual streaming format, with actor and comedian Patton Oswalt hosting for the 10th time.

Sir Peter Jackson, the director behind the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” film trilogies, received the Visual Effects Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award with Cate Blanchett presenting the honor.

The VES Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a body of work that has significantly contributed to the art and/or science of the visual effects industry, according to the society, which said Jackson is being honored for his “consummate artistry, expansive storytelling and profound gift for blending iconic imagery and unforgettable narrative on an epic scale.”

Others presenters included Zack Snyder, Jenna Elfman, Danny DeVito, Sacha Baron Cohen and Demian Bichir.
