A man jumped about 60 feet to his death from atop the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland shopping and entertainment complex Friday after an hours-long effort to try to get him to safety.

The theater is known worldwide as the site of the annual Academy Awards Oscars ceremony.

Traffic was jammed throughout the Hollywood area as rescuers made a massive effort to bring the man down to safety.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported via a Twitter post at 10:41 a.m. that a rescue operation was underway at 6801 Hollywood Blvd. Crews put out a rescue cushion and set up a two-line rope system with harnesses to help mental health experts approach the man in an effort to talk him down from his precarious vantage point.

About 3:15 p.m., the LAFD reported that the unidentified man “jumped to his death to an area firefighters were unable to access.”

There was no word of what led the man to end his life.
