The sheriff’s Temple Station Thursday announced a program dubbed “Kayla’s Kovers” designed to provide blankets and other items for homeless people in the county.
“During the holiday season, Temple Station deputies participated in Operation Warmth, a project (to) gather warm coats with the intention of providing warmth to the homeless population of Los Angeles County,” said sheriff’s Deputy Hector Figueroa of the Temple Station.
“A 7-year-old Temple City resident named Kayla and her family heard of the project,” Figueroa said. “Kayla and her family have been advocating for the homeless by providing food and assistance to those they saw in need.
“Kayla had a wish for homelessness to end, and after seeing a homeless person in the cold, she wanted to at a minimum to provide the warmth of a blanket,” Figueroa said. “Kayla said she did not want gifts for her birthday,” Figueroa said. “Instead, she asked for blankets for the homeless.”
Kayla’s mother contacted the sheriff’s department sergeant who had organized Operation Warmth, and arrangements were made for a new project: Kayla’s Kovers, under which blankets and other items would be distributed to the homeless in the county, Figueroa said.
Anyone wishing to donate new or clean blankets, or other items such as knit caps and toiletries, was urged to bring them to the Temple Station, 8838 Las Tunas Drive, by March 2. The items will be packaged and donated to local homeless shelters.
“There is still empathy in the world, and sometimes it takes children to take the lead and make things happen,” Figueroa said.
