A 32-year-old man who walked away from a Male Community Reentry Program facility was apprehended Thursday in Los Angeles.

Antonio Diaz was apprehended without incident about 7:40 p.m., one day after leaving the facility in Los Angeles, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced.

Diaz was sentenced to state prison from Los Angeles County on July 21, 2017, to serve a six-year, eight-month sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and evading police while driving recklessly.

Diaz arrived at the facility on Sept. 13, and was scheduled to be released from CDCR custody in May.

Since 1977, 99% of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended, a department official said.

Eligible state prison inmates are allowed to serve the end of their sentences in a re-entry center. The reentry program links offenders to a range of community-based rehabilitative services that assist with substance use disorders, mental health care, medical care, employment, education, housing, family reunification and social support.
