A 14-year-old freshman at Woodbridge High School was detained Wednesday on suspicion of stabbing a fellow student, who was hospitalized but is expected to recover.

Irvine police were called just before 12:40 p.m. to the high school off Alton Parkway near Culver Drive. The victim, whose name was withheld, was taken to an area hospital with a serious, but non-life-threatening, wound, said Farrah Emami of the Irvine Police Department.

The suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, ran off and was arrested at his nearby home  about 1:10 p.m., Emami said.

Students were on their lunch break at the time of the attack, she said, adding that there was no lockdown on the campus.

The stabbing reportedly occurred during an argument over a cell phone, and investigators consider it an isolated incident.

Police recovered the knife, Emami said.
