A 19-year-old man and two teens were arrested Tuesday following a police pursuit of a stolen car that ended with a fiery crash in Anaheim.
Just after 11 a.m., a patrol officer ran the license plate of a white Nissan Altima, which had been reported stolen, and began trailing the car while requesting backup, Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt said.
The officer followed the stolen sedan eastbound on Ball Road, then north on Magnolia Street and west on Orange Avenue, Wyatt said. When another patrol unit and the department’s helicopter caught up, the officer flipped on her patrol car’s lights and siren, Wyatt said.
The driver of the stolen car stepped on the gas and raced through a “solid” red light westbound on Orange Avenue before slamming into a blue Mustang traveling southbound on Beach Boulevard, Wyatt said.
The Nissan spun out and came to a stop on a planter on the southwest corner of the intersection, where the three occupants got out of the car and began running away, Wyatt said.
The Mustang crashed into two other vehicles and “burst into flames,” he said, but none of the occupants of those vehicles sustained injuries.
The officer who initiated the pursuit tried to negotiate through the traffic, but her vehicle was struck by a stakebed truck, Wyatt said. She was taken to an area hospital to be checked out, but “she’s OK,” Wyatt said.
Other officers chased down the three suspects, one of whom was subdued with a stun gun, Wyatt said. They were identified as Ryan Nigel Shelton, 19, of Cypress, and a teenage boy and girl from Los Angeles and Cypress, respectively, Wyatt said. Their names were withheld because they are juveniles.
The suspects were also taken to hospitals to be checked out — the girl had a neck brace on when loaded into an ambulance — but were apparently OK, according to reports from the scene.
