Santa Ana Police officers Saturday rescued a woman, her child and a man who tried to help them from the Santa Ana riverbed, authorities said.

It happened at 12:30 p.m. at First Street and the Santa Ana River, according to police.

Officers responded to a call about several people screaming for help and found the woman, her 8-year-old daughter and the would-be rescuer struggling to stay above water, police said.

Four officers went into the water and were able to pull the three from the river, police said.

The woman told officers they fell into the water at Fairview Street and she held onto her daughter but that her 12-year-old son continued down the river. He was located uninjured at Fifth Street and the riverbed, police said.

The mother and two children were taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said. The man who tried to rescue them was treated at the scene but refused to go to a hospital.
