Two men aboard a boat filled with marijuana were in custody Monday after officials found between 1,200 and 1,500 pounds of pot on the suspects’ craft off Calafia Beach in San Clemente.

The “suspicious boat” and the marijuana were discovered about 7:50 a.m. Sunday and reported to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department by state lifeguards, sheriff’s Lt. Nate Wilson told the Orange County Register.

There was no word of how the deputies learned of the shipment of marijuana, and there was no description of the boat.

Harbor patrol deputies responded to the location and found two men on board along with the marijuana, the Register reported.

The marijuana was confiscated by authorities and the two men arrested on suspicion of transportation and possession of marijuana for sale.

No other details were yet available, including the suspects names, their destination and where the pot-filled boat had put to sea.

It was not known if the marijuana was headed for distribution at any legal facility or for other purposes.
