The American Red Cross is teaming with Hello Kitty and Friends for a September campaign encouraging people in Orange County to donate blood or platelets as the Red Cross works to maintain the blood supply amid seasonal challenges, it was announced Monday.
People who donate blood or platelets from Sept. 1-20 will receive an exclusive American Red Cross x Hello Kitty plush mascot clip and surprise sticker pack while supplies last, according to the organization.
The promotion has already generated interest, with more than 17,000 potential new donors signing up to receive additional information and nearly 3,000 appointments booked during the first week after the collectible was announced, according to the Red Cross.
The organization said the blood supply continues to recover from critically low levels experienced during the summer but remains vulnerable heading into September.
Back-to-school activities can reduce donor availability, while severe weather and natural disasters can disrupt blood drives and prevent donations in affected communities, the Red Cross said.
The organization is urging donors to make and keep appointments to help ensure blood products remain available where they are needed.
Numerous blood drives are scheduled throughout Orange County from Sept. 1-20, along with donations available at Red Cross blood donation centers in Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Laguna Hills and Santa Ana.
Appointments can be made at RedCrossBlood.org, through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.
