A 71-year-old pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck as he tried to cross a Cherry Valley street, suffering fatal injuries, authorities said Friday.
David Beltran of Cherry Valley was struck about 6:20 a.m. Thursday in the 10400 block of Beaumont Avenue, near Cherry Valley Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Matt Napier told City News Service that Beltran was walking on Beaumont when he attempted to cross from west to east on the two-lane corridor.
“We obtained surveillance video from a business that showed the victim walking outside of the crosswalk,” Napier said. “He walked into the path of the pickup.”
The 68-year-old Cherry Valley man at the wheel of the 1999 GMC Sierra was going northbound at roughly 25-30 mph when he hit Beltran, according to the CHP spokesman.
He said that the driver, whose identity was not disclosed, immediately stopped and called 911.
Beltran was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he died less than three hours later.
Napier said the investigation is ongoing, and there was no indication that the motorist was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
