The Long Beach City Council has agreed to pursue a deal to bring a new minor league baseball team to Long Beach as early as next year.

The council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to pursue an agreement between the city, Cal State Long Beach and officials for the new team, which for the time being is being called the Long Beach Baseball Club.

The team would play its home games during the spring season at Blair Field at Recreation Park, which is also the home of Cal State Long Beach’s baseball team.

“I’m so excited about the possibility of bringing a professional baseball team to Blair Field. They’re bringing new energy, new resources and entertainment to our community,” said Councilwoman Kristina Duggan, who represents the area around Recreation Park, and has held discussions with CSULB about the field for years.

The potential Long Beach franchise would be the 13th team in the new independent league, which was launched last year following the exit of Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics from that city.

The new agreement would include improvements such as padded walls and a renovated visitors clubhouse. City officials will also study the potential for added noise and traffic in the area, according to the Long Beach Post.

The city’s last professional baseball team, the Long Beach Armada, folded in 2009.
