A dump truck hauling gravel crashed on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Jurupa Valley Monday, spilling its load across the eastbound side of the busy corridor and damaging at least one passing vehicle.
The crash happened about 10:55 a.m. near the Valley Way exit, according to the California Highway Patrol. The truck was in the middle of the eastbound 60 when the driver apparently lost control, causing the truck to spin 180 degrees, the CHP reported.
All of the gravel in the bed of the vehicle was slung across three of four lanes, leaving only the HOV lane with few or any rocks obstructing it, according to reports from the scene.
A Honda Accord trying to go around the truck was struck by falling rocks, cracking the windshield, the CHP said. The motorist was not injured, nor was trucker.
CHP officers initially shut down three lanes, but the HOV lane was also closed 45 minutes later to permit Caltrans sweepers to thoroughly clean the area.
A SigAlert was issued shortly after 11 a.m. due to the ensuing traffic jam, which extended back to the Interstate 15/60 interchange in Ontario.
The eastbound 60 was fully re-opened at noon.
