A 25-year-old woman’s legs were crushed and she may lose one of the limbs as five people were injured early Friday when a suspected drunken driver’s vehicle rear-ended a stalled car.
The stalled vehicle was being started with the use of jumper cables from another car in South Los Angeles.
The crash was reported at 12:11 a.m. on Vernon Avenue near Stanford Avenue, said Lt. Nate Williams of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Bureau.
Williams said a 51-year-old woman, a 2-year-old girl and a 6- month-old girl were parked in their vehicle on Vernon Avenue when a man’s vehicle traveling west on Vernon rear-ended stopped car.
The 25-year-old woman who was using her car to give the older woman’s vehicle a jump start was standing in between their two vehicles during the accident and her legs were crushed upon impact, Williams said.
All five people involved were hospitalized, and though none of their injuries were life-threatening, the 25-year-old woman was undergoing surgery and may lose a limb, Williams said.
The man was being hospitalized while in police custody and was expected to be arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the lieutenant said.
