The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a possibly autistic man, approximately 30 to 40 years old, who they said tried to steal some items from a 7-Eleven in Yorba Linda.

“He has not been responsive to deputies’ attempts to communicate through sign language,” the department said. “While being evaluated by mental health personnel, he wrote `Millie’ several times on paper.”

The man was arrested about 4:40 p.m. Saturday after he attempted to steal some items and resisted arrest, police said.

The suspect, who appears clean and well-groomed, was described as a 5-feet-6-inch Latino man weighing 135 pounds, approximately 30 to 40 years old, with brown eyes and black hair. He is possibly autistic.

“Deputies have exhausted attempts to identify the man, including reviewing missing person reports, contacting regional centers and homes that provide services for adults with autism, and running his fingerprints,” the department said. “Deputies have continued throughout the night to try and identify him, but have not been able to.”

He was being housed at the Intake Release Center for observation.

Anyone with information regarding the man’s identity was asked to call the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at (714) 647-7000.
