A 46-year-old man riding in a sports car when its driver lost control on Interstate 10 in Beaumont, causing the vehicle to flip over, was killed, and the driver was seriously injured, authorities said Friday.

Sandy Marks of Yucaipa was fatally injured just before 4 p.m. Thursday on eastbound I-10 at the Highland Springs Avenue exit ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Jonathan Torres said Marks was in the front passenger seat of a 2004 Infiniti FX35 being driven by a 19-year-old man who was traveling at an unconfirmed speed when he apparently lost control and “veered off the roadway.”

The car overturned and rolled, coming to rest in the middle of the ramp, Torres said.

“The severe impact caused the driver and passenger to be ejected from the car,” he said.

No other vehicles were involved.

Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location minutes later and discovered the victims lying on the exit ramp, both with major injuries.

They were taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where Marks died an hour later.

The driver, identified only as a Yucaipa resident, remained hospitalized Friday in serious condition.

“It is still under investigation at this time if alcohol or drugs played a role in this crash,” Torres said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP San Gorgonio office at 951-846-5300.
