A 45-year-old man who was killed when a silver sedan crashed into the center divider on the Hollywood (101) Freeway in Studio City was identified Tuesday.
The crash was reported at 2:14 a.m. Monday on the southbound freeway near where it turns into the Ventura (134) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A witnesses told the CHP the car was catching fire and that good Samaritans were trying to get the driver out of the vehicle.
Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters worked to free the driver, who was eventually pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
He was identified Tuesday by the Los Angeles County medical examiner as Benjamin Appel, who sustained blunt-force injuries.
“LAFD performed an extrication of the patient,” LAFD spokesman Jamie Stewart said. “One approximately 60-year-old male patient has been determined deceased and beyond medical intervention.”
An investigation was underway to determine why the car crashed into the center divider wall.
