A husband and wife were fatally stabbed Friday at their home in La Verne and sheriff’s detectives were searching for a young man wearing a backpack seen near the victims’ house around the time of the attack.

The twin stabbings in the 300 block of Roughrider Road were reported about 1:25 p.m., according to sheriff’s Deputy Grace Medrano.

Shirley Isom, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 89-year-old husband, Armie Isom, initially survived the assault and was hospitalized in critical condition, but succumbed to his wounds, sheriff’s homicide Lt. David Coleman said in a televised report.

The discovery of the victims reportedly was made by a groundskeeper, Medrano said.
