A retired Los Angeles Police Department detective who pleaded no contest to possession of child pornography was ordered Wednesday to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and to undergo one year of counseling.

Charles Daniel Henderson, 69, also was ordered to perform 30 days of community labor and to serve five years on probation.

Henderson, who pleaded no contest April 21 to the felony count, worked for the LAPD for roughly 20 years.

A search warrant served last October at Henderson’s home in Downey turned up more than 600 images of child or youth pornography, according to Deputy District Attorney Samer Hathout.
