A Hawthorne man was charged Wednesday with animal cruelty and domestic violence for allegedly throwing a metal rack at his girlfriend, who was holding a Yorkshire terrier that was struck and killed.
Brian Scott Burlingame, 56, pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of cruelty to an animal and injuring a cohabitant.
Burlingame is accused of throwing a metal rack Sunday at his girlfriend as she held her 9-year-old dog, according to Deputy District Attorney Frank Dunnick. The woman was injured and the dog was killed, the prosecutor said.
Burlingame — who was arrested late Sunday — was ordered to remain jailed in lieu of $120,000 bail pending his next court appearance July 1 in a Torrance courtroom.
If convicted as charged, he could face up to five years and eight months in state prison.
