A giant Air France A380 jet flying from Paris to Los Angeles made an emergency landing on Newfoundland after one of its four engines blew out.

Passengers aboard the double-deck jet tweeted images of the blown out engine, and Air France later confirmed the accident aboard flight AF 066.

The aircraft landed safely at 8:42 a.m. Pacific time, the airline said, and passengers are being rerouted from the remote Goose Bay airport.

Photos showed damage to the outboard engine on the right wing.

Passenger Sarah Eamigh told CBC News she was terrified after hearing a “boom” and then feeling the plane descend quickly.

“The cabin started vibrating. Someone screamed, and from there we knew something was wrong,” she said, adding that the trembling stopped about 10 minutes later. “We saw the cabin crew walking through the aisles quickly, and we heard an announcement from the captain that said one of our engines had an explosion.”
