Rail service between Los Angeles and San Diego was snarled Sunday, as a northbound Pacific Surfliner train hit a man who had rushed onto the tracks in northern San Diego Sunday.

The train hit a man just after 6:30 a.m., about half a mile north of Sorrento Valley. The northbound train was traveling about 60 miles per hour when the engineer observed a man emerge from nearby brush and run toward the tracks, but emergency braking did not avoid striking the man.

The Pacific Surfliner train heading towards Orange County and Los Angeles was delayed for more than an hour and a half, and two other trains were cancelled.
