A man with a gun near the long-term parking lot at Los Angeles International Airport was taken into custody by airport police, it was announced Saturday.
Officers responded about 4:45 p.m. Friday to a call of a man holding a gun to his head in the vicinity of Westchester Parkway and Arbor Vitae Street and located the man and what appeared to be a handgun in his waist band, according to Officer Alicia Hernandez of the Los Angeles Airport Police.
The man was resistant to commands, but his behavior was passive, Hernandez said.
Officers feared the man would hurt himself and talked with him until they were able to approach him and take him into custody, said Hernandez.
Police took possession of the gun and the man was transported to a mental health facility for further medical care and treatment, Hernandez said.
“The officers quick act of bravery and courage shows their dedication to the community they serve,” Chief of Airport Police David Maggard said. “I am proud to serve beside them.”
