Metro Division officers patrolling the Harbor Gateway area shot and wounded two suspects in a confrontation after hearing shots fired and a female victim of the suspects turned up at a hospital for treatment of her wound, authorities said Monday.
The Metro officers were on patrol at 10:25 p.m. Sunday at Normandie Avenue and 225th Street due to an increase in shootings in the area, Sgt. Barry Montgomery of the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Section said.
They heard shots coming from Normadale Park and, upon arriving, were confronted by two male suspects with handguns, Montgomery said. One suspect “fired several rounds at the officers and at least one round struck their police vehicle.”
The officers fired back and one suspect was struck, taken into custody and taken to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, the sergeant said. His condition was not available. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
During a perimeter search for the second suspect, police learned a wounded man fitting his description had gone to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, Montgomery said. His condition was also not available.
They were then notified by a second hospital that a female with a gunshot wound to her leg and an uninjured male had shown up and that the female was undergoing treatment, he said.
The ages of the suspects and victims were not available. The officer-involved shooting was under investigation.
