A man suspected of stealing a Corona police vehicle Saturday fled to a Riverside apartment complex where he barricaded himself before being arrested Saturday.

The unmarked police vehicle was stolen at about 2 p.m. on the westbound state Route 91 near Van Buren Boulevard following a collision, according to Riverside City Police Department spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback.

He said it was unclear if the police vehicle was involved in the collision.

According to Railsback, officers and the suspect exchanged shots at one point, though no one was struck by the gunfire.

Railsback said the suspect abandoned his own vehicle and drove the stolen police vehicle to an apartment complex in the La Sierra neighborhood in Riverside, near La Sierra and Minnier avenues, where he barricaded himself before eventually surrendering.

Railsback said the man was arrested and there are no other outstanding suspects.

The California Highway Patrol said all westbound lanes on state Route 91 are shut down between Adams and Van Buren boulevards until four further notice. The public was asked to avoid the area.

A photo from the scene shows an abandoned white pickup in the middle of the freeway.

The apartment complex where the suspect was arrested was also on lockdown, Railsback said.
