The Desert Hot Springs Police Department announced Tuesday that three people were arrested and 10 citations were issued during a DUI checkpoint over the weekend.

The checkpoint was conducted from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday at Indian Canyon Drive, south of 19th Avenue, due to data of impaired driving-related crashes in the area, according to a statement from the department.

Of 895 vehicles that were contacted, two people were arrested for driving under the influence, one for driving on a suspended license, and 10 citations were issued for driving unlicensed, police said.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” DHS Police Chief Jim Henson said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Police said impaired driving also includes marijuana, some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs that could interfere with driving.

A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, according to police. Impaired drivers will also have their license suspended.

The next checkpoint was set to be in March.
